As far as I can remember my grandad never really stressed about style or fashion and still never does, but oh boy does he look good. Even when taking a picture he doesn’t smile or pose. But there’s something so authentic about it. Posing just wasn’t cool back . But thats what made them look “bad ass”. So true to who we were as Sikhs. So true to our sikhi. That’s just how fashion was for singhs back in the days. It was just unspoken off. Just because turbans and beards weren’t in trend doesn’t mean we weren’t fashionable.
When doing this shoot thats what me and Harry had in mind. We wanted to show how singhs dressed back in the days, during times of war and Immigration. Just Unposed. To try and look “bad ass” like my grandad ( and others singhs in that generation) We knew it’ll be so different to other Singh shoots. But we had to showcase it.
Nowadays we like to take pictures which are more candid. More on the go. More natural. That’s exactly why I’ve tried to show here (picture below ). It doesn’t even look like we’re out for a photoshoot. In fact it looks like a bunch of singhs chilling. But for me that’s the only things that’s really changed. Our poses. How we portray ourselves in front of the camera. We’ve learnt to express ourselves in a unique matter. But style? That’s something we’ve always had.
